Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS)

In May 2011, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski joined AT&T Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other officials to announce the launch of CMAS in New York City and Washington, D.C. Widespread roll-out of CMAS began in April 2012. CMAS was created as part of the “Warning, Alert and Response Network Act” signed by President Bush on October 13, 2006. Only alerts that are immediate, severe or a likely threat to life, health or property will be delivered to mobile devices (to minimize the “cry wolf” syndrome).
